Hello! I’m Derek Lyndes
Bio
Personal Profile
As an educator in the Republic of Korea for the past five years, it has been my great privilege to teach in an international setting. Teaching English as an additional language, IB English literature, and IB Individuals & Societies has taught me empathy for students of English as well as more effective strategies for engaging diverse groups of students. I believe that every student has the right to a high-quality education, and prioritizing learner agency will increase motivation and deepen learning. Having dedicated myself to being a better resource for my students, I continue to pursue professional development and am focusing on improving my formative assessment techniques through the lens of Dylan Wiliam's work this year.
While abroad, I have explored my interests in ultimate frisbee, hiking, cuisine, and, of course, teaching. I have familiarized myself with the Korean culture, considering viewpoints and practices that differ from my own and challenge me. From coaching ultimate frisbee and the fitness team to supervising Model United Nations, my interests beyond the classroom continue to expand. I truly enjoy contributing to and learning from teaching teams, as collaboration with fellow MYP and DP practitioners is an invaluable resource. I sincerely hope to connect with like-minded international schools and continue my journey as an educator with new groups of teachers and students.
My partner, Clare Dreyer, is a PYP-trained teacher at Chadwick International who is also looking to call a new school home. Her professional website can be accessed here.
